Everything You Need To Know About Lip Fillers

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE LIP FILLER?

  1. To increase the volume of the lips. This is one of the most common reasons why people attend as fuller lips are considered more attractive.
  2. Anti-ageing purposes. There are various changes that develop with age.  As we age our lips begin to thin.  As a result they can look dehydrated with more noticeable lines within the lips themselves.  The vermillion border of the lip also begins to fade and from the side profile the lips appear flatter with loss of the natural pout.  We also start to develop wrinkles above the lips.  These are often known as ‘smokers lines’ however they are very common even in non-smokers.
  3. Down-turning at the corners of the mouth also develops due to volume loss leading to a sad or unhappy appearance
  4. A gummy smile can also be treated very effectively with dermal filler.

Dermal filler can treat a whole array of concerns resulting in a more attractive and youthful-looking mouth area which is instantly confidence-boosting.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CONSULTATION?

Your lip ratios and symmetry are analysed.  Your lips will also be viewed in relation to your other features such as your nose and chin in order to achieve the most aesthetically beautiful outcome.

WHICH FILLERS ARE USED?

I use the Juvederm range of hyaluronic acid fillers.  These are reversible and can be used to build up lip volume in a gradual and natural way.  One of my favourite fillers is part of the longer-lasting Juvederm Vycross range called Volift.  Another filler from this range called Volbella is also used in certain circumstances.

HOW LONG DO LIP FILLERS LAST?

You will see the result straight away.  The standard Juvederm range lasts 6-9 months and the longer lasting range lasts 12-15 months and sometimes longer.

IS IT PAINFUL?

I apply numbing cream for at least 15 minutes prior to the procedure and this does help a lot.  The filler itself also contains a local anaesthetic called lidocaine and the vast majority of people tolerate the procedure very well.

DO LIPS SWELL A LOT?

Lips can swell.  Injecting slowly and gently helps to minimise this.  There is less swelling with the dermal fillers Volift and Volbella.  A cool ice pack also helps. For 24 hours after the procedure you should avoid any strenuous exercise and alcohol as this will also help to minimise swelling.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

The common risks are swelling and bruising is a risk also but again this can be minimised with correct injection technique.  There are some extremely rare risks associated with lip filler such as filler getting into an artery.  I cannot stress enough seeing a practitioner who is aware of the complications, knows how to reduce the risk even further no matter how rare and who knows how to manage them.

WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR LIP FILLER?

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • If you already have full lips with the correct ratios and having filler would actually down grade your beauty I will not undertake the procedure. Sometimes us humans can be our own worst enemy and feel that we need treatments that, when viewed with an objective eye, we don’t!

WHAT IS THE COST?

Treatment with 1ml of lip filler from the standard range and premium longer-lasting range cost £280 and £500 respectively
