Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are the slightly diagonal lines that develop either side of the nose along the bridge and occur when the nasalis muscle contracts.  They are more obvious when laughing, smiling or wrinkling your nose.  In some people they occur with ageing but they can also be a tell-tale sign of having wrinkle injections elsewhere in the forehead.  This is because the nasal muscle over compensates.  If you do not like your bunny lines then they can be treated simply and effectively.

How is this achieved?

There are a variety of ways to treat fine lines and wrinkles. This will be discussed in more detail at your consultation but one of the most simplest and effective ways is through the use of anti-wrinkle injections.  Usually only two injections are required, one either side of the nasal bridge.  Some people also develop bunny lines along the top of the nasal bridge and this can also be treated.

Regardless of whether the bunny lines appeared naturally or following anti-wrinkle injections elsewhere the treatment is the same.

How does wrinkle relaxation work?

Wrinkles form when a muscle repeatedly contracts. For a muscle to contract, a nerve must release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where the nerve ending meets the muscle. Acetylcholine attaches to the muscle cells and causes the muscle to contract. Wrinkle relaxation injections stop the release of acetylcholine thereby blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles so they can no longer contract.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment will only be undertaken if deemed suitable following a consultation. The procedure itself is very quick, usually just one injection either side of the nasal bridge which only takes a few minutes however time is spent prior to the injections cleaning and disinfecting the skin, taking photographs and carefully marking the areas to be treated on the face.

Does it hurt?

Understandably a lot of patients are concerned about pain however the sensation is usually only that of a sharp scratch.  There are a number of ways to reduce pain and these include using extremely fine needles to administer the treatment and having a gentle injection technique. Topical anaesthetic cream is not needed.

Will I look natural?

Looking natural is really important to the patients that Dr Sabba treats.  You should still be able to move your face and not look frozen.  The aim is to still look like you but a fresher, more rested version of yourself.  This is another reason why the consultation is so important- in order for you to discuss what you are seeking but also so that any worries or fears can be addressed.

Will I need a check-up?

A follow-up appointment is always organised for patients two to three weeks after the wrinkle-relaxation procedure.  This is especially important for new patients where some adjustment may be needed in order to achieve the best result possible.  Some patients however may not feel the need to return so this is discussed on a case by case basis.

When will I see results?

Most patients start to see results by Day 5 and it takes two weeks for the final results to appear.  It is therefore important to plan your treatment in advance if you are attending a special event taking into account the two week follow-up in case any adjustments are needed.

How long do results last?

This is variable however the average duration is three to four months.  In some patients movement can return earlier, in others it can last longer.

What if they don't disappear completely with treatment?

If they do not disappear completely it may be worth considering other treatments that help improve overall skin quality by stimulating collagen production.  This will be discussed in your consultation.  As always there is always a role for good skin care alongside injectable treatments in order to age as well as you can.
